b. National Program on Key Basic Research Project
1.
Project name: The functional electronic materials: regulation and application&nb sp;of their topological quantum characteristics.
Project introduction: Six units participate in this project, Shanghai Jiaotong University , Zhejiang University , Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology Institute , Tsinghua Uni versity , University of Science and Technology of China and Peking University. The project is set by the following four topics: (1) Fabrication of topological quantum thin films and their novel properties studied by advanced spectroscopies. (2) Studies of preparation of multiferroic thin films and their heterojunctions and topological quantum effects. (3) Novel states of topological quantum and the exploration& nbsp; of quantum devices. (4) Theoretical and experimental studies on the topological quantum computation.

2.
Project Name: Application of Silicon Nanostructures in High Performance Solar Cells
Project introduction: The main purpose of the project is to improve the efficiency of the crystalline silicon based solar cells by employing silicon nanostructures, such as nanocrystalline silicon thin films, silicon nanowires and silicon nano films.
Spokesperson: Wenzhong Shen
Principle investigators: Maojun Zheng, Xiangyang Kong, Qingkang Wang, Hang Zheng, Zhengping Li, Hong Liu, Zhenzong Jiang
3.
Project name: PandaX Dark Matter Search Experiment
Project introduction: PandaX is designed to build and operate a ton-scale liquid xenon experiment to detect the so far elusive dark matter in the Universe. The experiment uses a two-phase xenon detector located at the China Jin-Ping underground Laboratory (CJPL), which is in the middle of a 18-km tunnel under 2400 meters of rock, in the Sichuan province of south-west China. It is one of the deepest underground labs in the world, ideal for a sensitive dark matter search. The PandaX program will evolve in two stages, initially probing the low-mass regime (<10 GeV/c^2) with a low energy threshold and ultimately employing a ton-scale detector to probe the higher-mass regime (10–1,000 GeV/c^2).

c. Projects supported by the Special Program for Key Basic Research
1.
Project Name: Study on high temperature superconducting tape and superconducting magnet
Project introduction: The project belongs to the domestic research projects of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) special plan and the project period is three years. This project is approved in September 2011 and in December the kick-off meeting was held. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is the leading unit and Huazhong University of Science and Technology is as a participating unit.

2.
Project Name: Research on new concept of high energy laser facility
Project Introduction:
Subject to future applications of green energy, the huge laser facilities are required not only high pulse energy, but also high plug-in efficiency and pulse repetition. However, most of existing laser facilities does not fill these requirements. Coming from the innovation of laser configuration, we are focusing on development of new concept and key technology of high energy laser facilities, exploring a Chinese way to efficiency, repetition and high-energy laser facility.
