Overview
There are 204 faculty members and staffs in the School of Physics and Astronomy, with 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 66 professors. We boast 7 special-term professors and 12 chair professors in the Yangtze River Scholars Program and 21 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Now, we have a state teaching base for engineering physics and a national physics experimental teaching demonstration center with subjects and researching institutes on theoretical physics, optics and photonics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics, particle physics, cosmology, solar energy, space and astrophysics, optical engineering and quantum optics and quantum information.
New Physics Building
Three subjects in our school namely condensed matter physics, optics, and theoretical physics, were assessed as doctoral bases one after another from 1981 to 1986. In 2000, the department earned approval to award the Ph.D degree in physics as a first-level discipline. In 1999, a postdoctoral mobile station on physics was set up here, and, in 2009, optical engineering. Optics was crowned as a key discipline by the Shanghai Education Commission in 1996. In 2002, condensed matter physics was approved as a state key discipline being the first state key discipline on sciences. In 2007, condensed matter physics successfully passed the national key disciplines examination and assessment organized by the Ministry of Education. And, in the same year, optics upgraded to be a state key discipline. We also boast a innovation team crowned by the Ministry of Education on semiconductor quantum structures and management of quantum process and a key laboratory on artificial structures and quantum management, Ministry of Education.
