For decades high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors have been the primary tool for gamma-ray spectroscopic measurements that require superior energy resolution. In recent years, researchers have refined the traditional planar or coaxial design of the HPGe detectors. These new detectors are now being used in the search for dark matter and neutrinoless double-beta decays. In this talk, I will review how these detectors are being deployed in these exciting measurements.
