Colloquium 141:Natural photonic structures: ingenious strategies of light steering in the biological world (Prof. Jian Zi, Mar.19)

Colloquium 141

Title:  Natural photonic structures: ingenious strategies of light steering in the biological world

Speaker:  Prof. Jian Zi, Department of Physics, Fudan University

Location:  Room 111, Physics Building

Time: 15:00-16:00, Wed, March 19 2014

Abstract:

In the biological world, photonic structures such as photonic crystals have been exploited to produce striking structural colors since the Cambrian period. Revealed photonic structures are diverse, delicate, complicated, and multifunctional as well. Natural photonic structures and their ingenious ways of light steering could be a great source of inspiration in our design and fabrication of new optical materials and devices for future technological applications. In this talk, I will present a few examples in peacock and parrot feathers, and scales of beetles about the interesting photonic-crystal structures and the subtle strategies of light steering by nature.
