With the exponential growth in computing power and theoretical advances, we have reached an era when materials search, discovery and optimization based on computational materials design are feasible. These calculations have been used to design high-strength steel, high performance lithium-ion batteries, and innovative catalysts. In this talk, I will discuss its application in advanced energy materials design as well as the scientific or technical challenges it is facing now.
