Molecular imaging is a leading force in a new era of personalized medicine where quantitative methods of engineering and systems sciences have a pivotal role in disease detection, diagnostics, and treatment. There are urgent needs to develop quantitative imaging methods and software tools in clinical applications. Such quantitative imaging may require the use of multiple imaging modalities that provide anatomical, functional, and molecular information of various diseases. This talk will illustrate the power of multimodality imaging and image-guided interventions (IGI) technology for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Deformable image registration, automatic image segmentation, computer assisted intervention techniques have been developed and validated for the management of cancer patients at Emory University. By combining multimodality imaging and multidimensional data to exploit our current knowledge of various diseases, this research is to have substantial positive implications for disease detection, diagnosis, and therapy.

Dr. Baowei Fei is a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Scholar and Director of Quantitative BioImaging Laboratory (www.feilab.org) at Emory University School of Medicine and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Dr. Fei received his PhD and Master degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Currently, Dr. Fei is an Associate Professor with Tenure in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at Emory University, and in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology. Before he moved to the USA, Dr. Fei was enrolled in the Extraordinary Youth Program at Xi’an Jiaotong University and received his Bachelor and Master degrees in Biomedical Engineering. He also received his PhD degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University before he earned his secondary doctor degree in the USA. Dr. Fei has presented internationally and is widely published in medical imaging. He served as an Associate Editor for Medical Physics, an Editorial Board Member for multiple journals including Clinical Medicine Insight – Urology and Advances in Molecular Imaging. He received numerous awards including the Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and the Outstanding Investigator Award from the Academy of Radiology Research in the USA. Dr. Fei has severed as a Principal Investigator for multiple federal grants from the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the USA. He has actively contributed to the medical imaging community and severed in various national and international panels and committees for funding agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF) in China and the NIH and DOD in the USA.
